10 Ways to stick to your fitness goals while on vacation and still have fun

FITNESS

FOCUS

It’s time, summer vacations are right around the corner. If you’re working hard to get in shape for an upcoming vacation, you won’t want to see the results of all your hard work ruined on your trip. But you want to have a fun time, too.

Don’t worry. It’s very possible to stick to your fitness goals and still have a lot of fun on vacation. Here are ten ways to enjoy both:

1) Walk to explore your new surroundings

There’s no better way to explore a new place than by walking or running. As long as your destination is walkable and safe, you’ll see things better this way than you’ll ever see by car. And exploring by walking is more fun, too. Take the time for a walking tour if available. These are a great way to learn about a new place. Basically, whenever you can walk on vacation, choose that over using a car.

2) Plan active excursions

Explore your vacation spot with active excursions. Bike, take a hike, horseback ride, snorkel…enjoy the activities that look fun at your vacation spot.

3) Try some new activities

Vacation is always a good time to explore new things. Do a little research before you go and you might find a place to try yoga, cycling, rock climbing, paddleboarding, or other new experiences. Use vacation time to try new activities that you don’t do at home.

4) Pack for exercise

You won’t be able to pack all the equipment you use in your usual workout at home, but you can easily tuck a jump rope or resistance bands in your suitcase. This will enable you to do lunges, squats, bicep curls and a cardio workout. And don’t forget your workout clothes and shoes! This is really all you need to keep moving on vacation.

5) Find the gym

Besides your jump rope and resistance bands, you may be able to find a nearby gym for quick use. If you’re at a hotel, there’s probably one on site. If not, see if there is a workout facility nearby. Many offer one-week free trials or cheap day passes. Signing up for an exercise class while on vacation can be part of your travel experience!

6) Get your workout in at the start of the day

It’s common for vacation days to be full of activities, excursions, meals, having drinks, etc. If you don’t get in your workout before the day begins, chances are it may not happen. Getting up 30-minutes early on vacation may not sound ideal, but it’s better than finishing your day tired and missing your exercise. It doesn’t have to be a lot. If you can only get in five minutes of jumping rope at the start of your day, that’s better than nothing!

7) Enjoy, but watch your alcohol intake

We aren’t suggesting you completely skip alcohol on your vacation if that’s something you want to do. You’re there to enjoy your vacation! But don’t overindulge every night either. And try to skip the sugary drinks. Besides adding calories quickly, the sugary cocktails also contribute to hangovers more than other drinks.

8) Pack healthy snacks

If you’re eating junk all day and packing in a day’s worth of calories at every meal, sticking to an exercise routine won’t make up for that. Of course, you should enjoy eating out on vacation. But if you pack some healthy snacks for in between meals, you won’t be starving when it’s time for lunch or dinner. You’ll then be able to make better food choices at meal time, so pack healthy treats and snack frequently.

9) Eat local foods

When visiting somewhere new, it’s fun to eat local food. By eating local, you’re getting foods that are fresh in the area. Try your destination’s healthy and fresh dishes—sampling the local cuisine can be a great part of travel.

10) Don’t expect your workout to be as hard as it is at home

Most of the time on vacation, you’ll do plenty of walking and other tourist activities. This  will make up for not exercising as rigorously as you do at home. And it’s your vacation, so cutting back a bit on exercise is fine. After all, vacation is a time for rest and relaxation.

So don’t beat yourself up if your exercise isn’t as intense as it is at home. Try to get some exercise in though—every little thing you do is better than nothing. You’ll be home soon and back to your regular routine at Outlaw FitCamp!

Relax and enjoy

When it comes to sticking to your fitness goals while on vacation, remember that moderation is the key. You don’t need to try to lose weight on vacation, but you can try to maintain the progress you made before leaving. You’re probably spending a lot more time on your feet all day and that will be helpful. If you don’t get in all the workouts you intended to, don’t beat yourself up over it.

In the end, occasional rest and relaxation are just as important for your physical and mental health as working out. Enjoy your trip!
