We understand that everyone who wants to get in shape wants to do it quickly. We all want weight loss or a stronger body fast!
But fast results are rarely long-lasting results, and are often dangerous. If you want long-term success when trying to get in tip-top shape, there are important mistakes to avoid and changes to make.
Here are our do’s and don’ts from Jesse James Fit and Outlaw FitCamps for getting in shape in a way that’s the fastest possible, while also being safe and long-lasting.
Don’t Make These Common Mistakes
1) Don’t expect overnight results
This is the age-old bad news that people have a hard time accepting. But you know it’s true…losing weight and getting in shape takes two things: smart choices and time.
We’re not saying you can’t do it more quickly if you follow the correct ways to do it consistently. But weight loss just doesn’t happen overnight.
2) Don’t fall for every fad diet
Master cleanses, diet pills, the cabbage soup diet, the blood type diet—even the tapeworm diet (yes, this was a thing). There’s always a new diet that supposedly unlocks the secret of weight loss. But you know the truth: there are no secret solutions.
3) Don’t starve yourself
It’s tempting to starve yourself when you want to fit into that pair of jeans next weekend, but it doesn’t work that way. In fact, by messing up your metabolism, starving yourself actually causes weight gain. It can also lead to mood changes, stress, depression, muscle loss, and decreased energy, among other problems. So please don’t starve yourself for those jeans!
Our Do’s For the Fastest-Possible and Safe Results:
1) Work with a personal trainer for injury-free guidance to your specific goals
Personal trainers are experts at helping you achieve your specific goals injury-free, safely, and as quickly as possible with lifetime success in mind.
At Outlaw FitCamp, we have the best trainers around. If you want long-term results, a personal trainer will help you meet your goals. You can read more about the benefits of personal training here.
2) Listen to your body
You’ve heard the old mantra, no pain, no gain? Well, it’s really not true. If you consider “pain” the difficult, out-of-breath feeling you have during exercise, or the moderately sore muscles the day after a workout, then yes—those are signs you’re progressing. But if you experience real pain during exercise and ignore it, you may be injuring your joints and muscles.
Listen to your body, and you’ll be able to tell the good pain from the bad. This is another area where a personal trainer can be invaluable to your exercise routine.
3) Find an exercise you like
We can’t promise that you’ll love every minute of exercise, but there are always some activities that are more enjoyable for each individual than others.
Some people enjoy group exercise more, some enjoy running; others like lifting weights. Find something you like (or at least don’t hate) and do that.
4) Get comfortable being uncomfortable
If someone has a weight loss solution for you that’s easy and quick, they’re trying to sell you something. And what they’re trying to sell you just won’t work long term.
Getting in shape means making choices every day that are a little uncomfortable. Wake up early, head to a workout on the way home from work, eat lightly and then take a walk at lunchtime, join a group exercise class in the evenings…just pick one or two changes to your daily routine. As you fit in healthy activity, you’ll see results. It may be uncomfortable at the time, but it’s so worth it in the long run!
5) Eat right and exercise consistently
We’re saving the best for last. Eating right and exercise must go hand-in-hand for real success. All the working out in the world won’t keep you healthy if you’re constantly binging on food that’s sugary, heavy, and full of saturated fat. And eating well, but laying on the couch all day, isn’t healthy either.
You need both exercise and eating right to be in great shape, and you need those consistently. The key is to build lifelong healthy habits. Otherwise, you become a yo-yo dieter, which is a dangerous way to treat your body.
Getting in Shape Takes Patience
Everyone—and we understand this, we mean everyone—would love to have quick results when trying to get into shape. But that’s why there are so many people who are out of shape—the quick, easy solutions just don’t work!
Getting in shape for life takes time and hard work, but it can be done! Follow our do’s and don’ts, and you’ll achieve the fastest way to get in tip-top shape in a safe way.
